What Do I Want to Be When I Grow Up

Since retiring from the City of Mesa, I have often wondered if I missed the boat. I started working there fresh out of high school, and to be honest I never thought of it as my career. It was just a job to earn money to spend. Well as it happened, 30 years passed by and I was still working there. I first started as a cashier taking utility payments, moved to become a public works assistant, which was just a glorified name for a phone center person. I ended up supervising, which was no fun at all, and then ended as a plans examiner. Now that I am retired I wonder if I should go back to school and study..............what? Let's face it, I am entering the twilight years if you figure that 40 is middle age. I still don't really know what I am interested in, and can you teach a slightly older than middle aged dog new tricks? Maybe I should think about going to cooking school and learn to make all the delicious foods out there. My sister in laws can make a 7 course dinner out of scraps laying around their refrigerator. Or maybe become a computer programmer. However, I don't think pounding on the keyboard and yelling at the PC counts as programming it. Maybe I should just relish in the thought that I am retired, which I do everyday, buy I really need to appreciate that I have done my time. I guess I am feeling a tad guilty cause I am not working. Well I know what will make this feeling pass, I am off to eat the M & M's I have stashed away. Hope you all figure out what you want to be when you grow up!

I ask myself this all the time! I have no idea what I would want to do, all I've ever done is raise kids. Just relax and enjoy your time, you've earned it!

Relish retirement but take a class or two and see if you feel inspired!

Marilyn, you're just not thinking right... of course you earned it and whether you thought of it as a career, it was and it's not about what you did, it's about who you served... As far as worrying about not working, remember there are still people that need to work to provide for their families. When the economy picks up around here, then that's the time to think that you should be doing something. In the meantime, concentrate on personal growth through classes or volunteering.
